Apparently, sunflower oil is now selling online for more than € 10 per liter. Some Edeka markets (local equivalent of Tesco's) are locking up oil bottles along with fine spirits.

Some customers seem to think one can deep fry only with sunflower oil. And here I was wondering what a lady in my local organic store was up to with three bottles of organic sunflower oil. Oh the stupidity!

Reminds me that we are down to two bottles of olive oil...

  2. Eric, I left a cryptic reference to this a couple of posts back.

The Newest Bitcoin Diet Trend Is Hating ‘Seed Oils’
That canola and other seed oils have ruined our diet is an idea at the nexus of Bitcoin, alternative nutrition, and skepticism of modern institutions.

Looks like a fresh promotion of healthy seed oils. Just as anyone with doubts about the jabs or who had reservations about the loss of civil liberties instantly became an anti-vaxxer or covid-denier, concerns about diet will make one a rabid Bitcoiner. Infantile insults replace reasoned debate.

  4. This 2016 article by Gary Taubes just turned up in a low-carb Facebook group. He looks back on the shaming he received after his infamous 2002 article "What If It's All Been A Big Fat Lie?" His experiences are an interesting reflection of what's going on today with scientific censorship and groupthink.

The final sentence of the penultimate paragraph, once this pandemic is long past, may turn out to be laughably overstated (laugh while you cry).

  7. Just returned from grocery shopping. Thought with just one bottle of olive oil left, better stock up before the panic buyers turn to olive oil. At the local Aldi's (Trader Joe's for those in NA), the oil shelf looked like it had been raided. A few bottles of sunflower seed oil left at € 4.99 ($ 6), no canola. Their organic olive oil was gone, too, but that happens from time to time. Plenty of their regular olive oil left (which I like better this year anyway), at € 3.79.

Good news, as this means there's less of an incentive to adulter olive oil (not that I was worried too much about the Aldi product, since are known for having their own lab to perform checks).

  12. Hi,
There was earlier discussion on data delay effects on the mortality curves https://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2021/11/is-vaccine-efficacy-statistical-illusion.html

From Alberta Canada, they openly tell that the “airplane rule” i.e. 14 to 21 days delay is applied to numerical statistics. Then they helpfully plot the raw numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths (fig 12):
    https://web.archive.org/web/20220107094256/https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm#vaccine-outcomes

There seems to be a lot of cases for all ages after the first shot. Strikingly, 180 days after 2nd dose the cases explode. Wane is too soft a word to describe this. The deaths also peak shortly after rollout, focusing on older people.

Let’s take English mortality data on 60+ and 70+ after rollout, drawn by prof. Fenton (featured in the post mentioned). Combining the Alberta data to this, considering the temporal difference (50+ would have started later as per rollout), these seem real deaths instead of time shift. Might be a combination of the two as well… So the unvaxed inherit the problems from rollout. From the okhsa excel, the same happened to 2nd vaxed group after booster rollout in September. Their mortality started to multiply, getting worse month by month.

  13. This effort to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat took my breath away. It is not the conclusion I would've drawn.

"More than two years into the pandemic, it’s clear that the country has failed its primary mission of saving lives. The U.S. is now approaching a devastating 1 million deaths from Covid-19, an incomprehensible loss of life. But within this massive failure there has been a public health success: The tireless work, ingenuity, and collective action of scientists, public health practitioners, and clinicians in both the public and private spheres — reminiscent of what NASA scientists and engineers did, but on a much larger scale — has led to what is arguably the single most successful vaccination program in U.S. history...But the vaccines — their development, manufacture, and widespread uptake — have been a massive success."

At least they said "arguably". Freudian slip, maybe?

Just trying to follow. Are you explaining the peak in deaths of the unvaccinated by saying that they are newly vaccinated but counted as unvaccinated?

In those two pictures, the peak deaths seem to be delayed by 4 - 6 to the midpoint of the vaccinations (and more like 8-10 weeks to the start). I can see how someone who tested positive 13 days after vaccination would be counted as unvaccinated, but if they went on to die four weeks after testing postive, would the still count as unvaccinated?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Captain Sunset, yes, it's true but you don't need any of that, just a one to two week delay in reporting and this is amplified by actively transferring one-dose vaccinated to the unvaccinated cohort. You can give a saline placebo "vaccine" and still get a >90% efficacy using this technique, but *only* during the roll-out period. The impression is that the vaccine *works* for a couple of months, surprise surprise. That's without the vaccine induced immunosuppression combined with covid exposure at the vaccination centres.

I have great respect for Prof Fenton.

  26. Hi
Some additional data for the mortality graphs.

The multiplier ukhsa excel announced for “covid deaths” months 1-9 was 32 unvaxed vs. 2nd vaxed. Well, this included Jan where 2nd vax population-years was 1% and there was a waning covid wave, being responsible for 2/3 deaths for unvaxed for the whole period 1-9. Things evened out by week 10, but the unvaxed higher mortality at start is a fact due to wave, of course.

Now, the two graphs show this and a very timely tight mortality following the rollout for unvaxed group, less than two weeks. At the same time there is no reaction among the vaxed population. This is counter intuitive, the unvaxed population should fare with rather constant mortality and the problems visualized by the Alberta data, right after 1st dose, should look like the unvaxed curve. Call it a flip, a soul shift by 2 weeks, while the “immunization” had yet to happen.

The multiplier off course went milder month by month. In December month, mortality against 2nd shot was 1,3 times not 32. However, the boosters had started in September so the comparison should have been to boosted… but the mortality rate doubled each month from August to December for the 2nd vaxed, indicated overflow from booster problems.

This is a very popular comparison, and poor; the whole of unvaxed vs. the last vaxed category. Let me quote battlefield analogy: Trench (unvaxed mortality 1,5) is not so safe as bunker (fully vaxed 0,9), but to get there, a minefield (corona mortality for partially vaxed 4) must be crossed under crossfire (vaxed death from other reason 3). So, comparing “fully vaxed” to those remaining in “trench” leaves a lot of bodies on the battlefield, reducing the population in bunker with reduced risk. Of course, those who fall within 14m of trench, are calculated as “stayed in unsafe trench”. They also have a category “ever waxed” as a meta-analysis of all phases, but this is seldom used, and the last category is by person-years dominant. The numbers above are quite close to published “mortality per 100 000 person years, age stratified”.

Intuitively, one would expect that a “safe and effective” injection would save deaths from covid but not from other causes, i.e., the saved vaxed souls would fare worse in “death from other causes”. This is persistently not the case.

As Prof. Fenton puts it, “For example, even at the end of the reporting period (when errors such as death misclassification should be minimal and indeed the plots converge) the non-covid mortality rate for the vaccinated is still consistently lower than that of the unvaccinated. This suggests that the proportion of unvaccinated must be systematically underestimated.”

  27. The copious comments below the blogarticle linked by Peter are a good read, demonstrating the complexity of attempting to draw any firm conclusions from the data as presented. I don't know what to believe about it all and that's good because it gives free reign to my innate skepticism and I definitely know who I don't trust...

Meanwhile I just read that the Valneva vaccine has been approved in the UK. It is a whole inactivated virus type of vaccine. If the bullet points can be trusted it looks quite promising viz:

*Positive Phase 3 results of a randomized, observer-blind controlled immunogenicity trial Cov-Compare comparing the vaccine candidate VLA2001 to an active comparator vaccine (Press Release)

*~3000 participants aged 30 and over
    *~1000 participants aged 18-29 years

    * Superior neutralizing antibody titer levels compared to the active comparator vaccine
    * Neutralizing antibody seroconversion rate above 95% (Non-inferiority compared to active comparator vaccine)
    * Generally well tolerated (significantly better tolerability profile than AZD1222)
    * Complete absence of severe COVID-19 cases despite circulating variants
    * VLA2001 induced broad T-cell responses against S, M, and N proteins

Here in Aus the Novavax vaccine us approved. That is a protein subunits vaccine. Seems to be good but new vaccination rates have dropped away here so not many takers. Some people I know, sciencey-medical immunology types had decided to forego the delightful mrna vaccines and wait for Novavax to become available but now they say they'd rather take their chances with the disease than have the jabs.

  29. On Beyond Antibodies (apologies to Dr. Seuss).

There was an FDA advisory committee meeting last week, purportedly about boosters. Dr. Meryl Nass summarize the meeting. Two big points:

"1. Many members and presenters agreed that antibody levels (aka titers) are not a valid measure of immunity (they are not a correlate of protection, and there is currently NOTHING measurable in the blood that is considered a valid reflection of immunity). This admission is HUGE, as it reveals that neutralizing antibody titers can no longer be used to authorize or approve COVID vaccines.

"2. Therefore the only way to determine vaccine effectiveness is a clinical trial."

    https://merylnass.substack.com/p/what-happened-at-the-fdas-4622-advisory

    ReplyDelete
  30. cave, so yes, a clinical trial might be a good idea. I wonder if anyone ever thought of that? It's now clear that the original advertising campaigns (aka "clinical trials") used the technique of moving just-vaccinated to un-vaccinated during roll-out and were only run until statistical significance generated by this ruse got them EUA, about 7-8 weeks.

On the first point, even in very, very early 2020 in the UK patients destined to die from COVID had massive antibody levels. But still died.

The FDA do not look particularly respectable today, any more so than the CDC or their UK equivalents do. Incompetent corporate minions comes to mind as a descriptor.

    Ditto WHO.

In some ways I wish I believed all the bullshit over the last few years. It would be almost luxurious to believe Pfi$er and the WHO have my wellbeing at heart and that the vaccines work. Must be so reassuring. Sadly I'm stuck here in a reality where I don't.

I think it is COVID that is tired. Or people have grown weary of and bored with it. Countries opening up, demand for shots down, mask mandates on planes losing in court, Poland reneging on its contract with Pfizer. The clock is running out on COVID.

Of course, the Distinguished Mayor of New York City seems determined to keep it alive by ordering toddlers, and only toddlers, to wear masks.

Another sign is that the NYT article on viral interference is paywalled for me, probably until May. Previously all COVID articles were available to non-subscribers.

  35. Yet another great substack. One of my particular interests the last couple of years has been the suppression of legitimate scientific discourse. He goes into the recent history of the Academy (in Part 1) and how it enabled the coronavirus narrative in Part 2, linked here).

"With a functional academy, it would have been determined in short order, likely before March of 2020, that the coronavirus was not such a great threat. Already by that time there was epidemiological data from the involuntary laboratory provided by the Diamond Princess cruise ship that demonstrated that the infection fatality rate was some fraction of a percent for the majority of the population. A functioning academy would have taken hold of these results, and confronted the hysterical models from the Imperial College of London claiming that literally everyone was going to die horribly, no, maybe they'd die twice, that was how bad the Dread Rona would be...

"The inner working of the models would have been examined, their numerous and obvious and embarrassing flaws held up for public ridicule, and the models and those who made them laughed out of the public conversation in scornful disgrace...

"Some few, some brave few, tried. Many of them top names in their various fields, award-winning scientists and medical professionals with impressive lists of publications and large numbers of citations, academic metrics that theoretically give one's word weight, but against the weight of the Great Narrative proved utterly powerless. We have long known that the establishment defines itself as the body of experts; the past two years taught us that. with nauseating circularity, experts are defined as those who agree with the establishment..."

I took a wonder down the 'ultra processed foods' narrative the other day - The sheer number of non-food additives in foods makes for a very confounded bit to make sense of. Such additives did not get the type of safety studies that the public thinks they have.

So much that we just don't know - take polysorbate-80 emulsifier - added to lots of things to make them 'creamy'. There is some concern that it effects mucous membranes lining the gut - perhaps causing bowel problems. Then I see it is added to vaccines - injected - without proper safety trials.

    ,.,.
I was wrong about vaccines - I understood/understand that the measles vaccines were/are a really good idea - most of the childhood vaccines of my time had good risk:benefit ratios. But nothing stays the same - I would not have gotten regular influenza vaccines if I had known the full picture - even then they were not doing proper full disclosure of the risks. ( These vaccines appear to have mild risks - and do a poor job at prevention and appear to possibly make one more susceptible to other strains. I have a hunch - don't know - that the rise in syndromes like fibromyalgia, MS, ME/CFS, neuropathy, etc may be from over use of vaccines. ) Hiding the risks to prevent 'vaccine hesitancy' is just wrong - has destroyed my trust of the system.

    - last I remember reading pastured cattle is carbon negative because more carbon is worked into the ground compared to greenhouse gases released
    - how can the mask pictured in the Torygraph article be effective? it looks like the exhaled air passes along the surface of the mask which would require a super effective catalytic effect - as opposed to a mask that captures all the exhaled air.
    - how will the poor cow like the mask?

Masking was largely non-existent in either county. Went largely unmasked myself and there were quite a few situation where I was not comfortable, but turned out to be unable to get infected (in spite of unknown added exposure to LA). I did wear a mask in immigration (90 minute wait in crowed hall in EWR) and Boston public transport and was glad I did (people sneezing around me).

Polysorbate: I noticed previously that every kind of food is more foamed with each visit: Pizza dough, scrampled eggs, ice cream, sauces, cakes. Maybe this is so people think they can eat XXL portions and cut down on calories. Definitely not nice, this stuff. This is from German wikipedia article:

It is approved in the EU as a food additive number E 433[2]. It is chemically and biologically largely inert.

Polysorbate 80 is used in the pharmaceutical industry for viral inactivation of blood products and is used as a solubilizer and emulsifier in drug manufacture to emulsify oily (lipophilic) substances in aqueous bases. It is one of the few surface-active substances that are parenterally compatible. Furthermore, it is a component of the micellar SARS-CoV-2 vaccine NVX-CoV2373.

Particularly pure grades are prescribed for drug manufacture and are specified in pharmacopoeias.

    Safety information
In 2015, a study was published in the journal Nature demonstrating that over a 12-week period, a 1-percent level of polysorbate 80 in drinking water caused disturbances in intestinal flora, intestinal inflammation and weight gain in mice. A 2/3 reduction in the protective mucus layer was observed on the intestinal wall.[8] Draize test in rabbits, by eye: 150 mg low irritant.[9]

  51. The picture looked unreal to me, too, when I was first reading the article. But not that she is credited with the picture, so it is probably a cell phone picture that was cropped. The artefacts around her outline are clearly compression related (jpeg in agressive mode). Note that the left outline has strong artefacts because the algorithm recognized little detail, whereas those loose strains of hair are pretty well resolved because the algorithm recognized detail. With photoshop, it would have been the other way around.

  52. @Eric re "...can't see much more than the picture of the cow with the mask before the paywall kicks in. Wondering:..."

One does not need to read the article to realize the idea is ludicrous.

And I'm sure the cows will not be happy about it, especially if it becomes mandated.

  53. CN , the cow and mask thing --- as people say , if you live long enough everything repeats :) But I am old enough that when I was a child the milkman had a horse van and the Baker, the 'rag and bone' man (recycling) etc but the horses suffered the indignity of attached rear end bags so that horse manure didn't litter the streets, much. There's no end to the impositions of humans upon working animals.

I sometimes wonder whether a network of horse based transport like that might have a much lower carbon hoofprint?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Pass: depends. The horse does not have an off switch and will need fuel and generate CO2 almost at the same rate when not working. It also moves slowly. If you had a milk cart driven by a single cylinder or small electric engine, it would probably beat any horse hands down. Mind you, since the milk cart is mostly stop and go, you could probably recharge it with solar panels on its tour.

  55. Sinovac-Vaccine super effective after three doses?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c15m3yhlIxk

John Campbell shows a graph at roughly 8 minutes into this video, showing estimated ranges of effectiveness against severe disease and death of Sinovac and Biontech. For one and two doses, Sinovac lags far behind. Unfortunately, the graph doesn't say in which wave (Delta, Omicron, BA2?) this was compiled and for how long after the last vaccination this effect persists.

However, does anybody have a handwaiving explanation how the Sinovac vaccine could overtake Biontech?

Sinovac Coronavac is an inactivated virus particle vaccine with aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. Could this be that after three doses the immune system finally learns to attack the virus capsule?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think it is a reasonable assumption that the answer is no. Obviously, with a completely ineffective vaccine there will be immunity from field virus and eventually this natural immunity will predominate, despite the vaccine. There might be more of a problem with the immunosuppressive mRNA vaccs.

To suggest these vaccines are crap would be an insult to faeces.

    Peter

    ReplyDelete
  57. John shows about half the title of the source at the bottom of the graph. The paper seems to be this:
    https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.03.22.22272769v1.full.pdf

with his graph made from the section "severe and fatal disease" of Tab. 2.

Now, the data are from Hong Kong which ran a Zero Covid strategy from the beginning. There were 12,600 cases up to the end of 2021 in a population of 7.6 million, i.e. a million and a half more than Denmark. Then Omicron BA2 took over in January of this year, with nearly one million cases and 5000 deaths up to middle of March.

They analyzed about 5000 each of mild, severe and fatal cases hospitalized between December 31 and March 8, i.e. the severe and fatal cases were wildy overrepresented compared to total cases.

What this means is that BA2 was hitting a population that was mostly naive regarding exposure to previous variants, so we have to look for other explanations than natural immunity.

The only reasonable hypothesis I can think of is the triple exposure to inactivated wild type virus taught the immune system to recognize the capsule proteins which didn't change much between variants. Biontech mRNA vaccine does not make capsule proteins, and unlike Western populations, there had been little previous exposure to live virus, so triple Biontech vaccinated had some disadvantage.

Traditional vaccines needing three courses is not unusual. However, Peter, didn't you say that this approach failed spectectularly with feline and other animal CV?

  62. Peter, In my very small golf club, where we all know what buttons to press to wind each other up, the vitriol seems to be calming down a bit. My joking is still not permissible (I'm still banned on the WhatsApp), but I feel the worm is turning as the infection evidence is all out there in front of them - well to those who care to look. One or two have still not had Covid, but virtue signaling is still paramount. Alarmingly, many discussions revolve around their booster status. The future? Yes, I have four working children, and their vaxx pressuring was quite alarming. One is still not vaxxed, and thankfully none of my eight g'kids. Healthwise, I worry about the wall of bull that they all get on the non-carnivore front. It's very much an age-group thing for them. If the 'young' Hackney hipsters happen go along to Hommerton Hospital feeling unwell the first thing they are now asked is are they vegan! Many are, and so just get a B12 jab! Sorted. Kinda. They still do not look that health, and so my dearest request to you is please hurry up and identify that missing ROS.

  64. I'm probably way behind the eight-ball on this, about how the spike protein in the vaccines isn't what you think it is.

    Two articles.

"COPTIGATE - THE WORST DESIGN FLAW IN HUMAN HISTORY THAT IS IMPACTING YOUR HEALTH"
    https://ehden.substack.com/p/coptigate-the-worst-design-flaw-in-human-history-that-is-impacting-your-health

It refers to the second article, on which Peter McCullough was the lead author. "Differences in Vaccine and SARS-CoV-2 Replication Derived mRNA: Implications for Cell Biology and Future Disease" https://anandamide.substack.com/p/differences-in-vaccine-and-sars-cov

The intro from the McCullough article:

The simplification of scientific jargon in the realm of public health can lead to the construction of a false consensus. One such over-simplification exists in our discussions surrounding the expression of SARs-CoV-2 spike protein in mRNA vaccines. This spike protein is often referred to as being bio-equivalent to the naturally expressed spike protein in SARs-CoV-2. Accordingly, it is suggested that this "may” constitute a safer immunological exposure as the rest of the genes responsible for replication of the virus are omitted. This often leads one to assume that the pathologies that arise from vaccine expressed spike protein should be a subset of those you might experience with the full-length live virus. The mRNA vaccines have the benefit of being a non-replication competent immune exposure, but are the spike proteins truly equivalent?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yes, I think the vaccines are a very big booboo!

"this "may” constitute a safer immunological exposure"

Or may not. Probably not. Hubris is not without its problems.

    Peter

    ReplyDelete
  66. Of course they are not equivalent because just looking from the outside, the capsule is missing. Since the caspule proteins mutate less, they might constitute a more stable target for a vaccine. Why didn't any of the mRNA or vector vaccines try to include code for the capsule?

Is this the secret behind the "surprise win" of 3x Sinovac over 3x Biontech in Hong Kong? Maybe. If so, why didn't that approach work in the feline vaccine? How many courses were given of that vaccine?

  68. @Cave, I'm in! I'll take on anyone. Most folk I know just shy away from ANY form of discourse. Even (...much needed dark) humour is out of the question. I'm 71 in July. I had 'Delta' Covid in Nov/Dec. Not such a big drama for me really. The only 'recognized' death (I am very suspicious of some other jibber-jabbed elderly deaths), was that of a close friend (an overweight/pre-diabetic golf buddy who loved his cake), who died early on (August 2020) whilst on a ventilator (as I understand it 90% of all those put on ventilators sadly died). I read once of a (heartfelt) British NHS ICU nurse who said that if folk really knew what we had been done (to those infected with Covid) they would stone us). Anyway, I've had far worse flu's (2/3 that I can recognize). Today, I'm stronger, I'm healthier, and my golf handicap has come down! All of that really, really bugs some people - which is kinda sad. Why? They have been royally had. I eagerly await Desmet's ('formation') book.

A commentor mentioned this is a risk both from injection and infection. I sure like to know the probability of that. Wouldn't we then have the same risk from other coronaviruses too? I could see it being more of a problem from multiple injections and boosters that are focused totally on the spike protein…

This could put a crimp in my plans for the South Dakota pub crawl.

  74. Can anyone put their hand on their heart, and say, yup, that's a picture of a viron/virus. No question about it. My paid-up mortgage and the kids' lives are on it. I'm not convinced by the efforts cobbled together by teams of 'expert' virologists playing the equivalent of an elaborate cross-over game of Minesweeper/Battleships in trying to scare the crap out of folk, or that of a pic of a washed-out exosome, or indeed that of a combo of a joy-riding retrotransposon from the land-down-under, but a pic/hard-evidence of a plausible sodding virus. A pic of a coronavirus would be even better. I get it that the bedrock of biology seemingly just has to employ a virus to get us all on board, but it's been a few decades since it was thought a picture of a virus was evidenced, but time and technology have moved on. Hasn't it? Is it all... astrology? Anyone?
