Gone surfin'
Hoping for warmer waves in Devon. Hoping for ANY waves in Devon! The pic was around 2004 or 2005, probably January on the North Sea. Not cool, more like COLD. But adrenalin assisted lipolysis to fuel thermogenesis saves all but the fingers! Oh, and keeping your head out of the water helps.

Back middle of next week but straight on to a late shift...

looks fun! have a great time and stay warm.
I've been enjoying the last batch of posts very much--thanks!
P,
That must be bloody cold: water temp down here on South Coast NSW is down to 15 degrees and that has the effect of changing ones sex in no time at all!
The wave in the pic looks offshore, but it looks like a "straighthander".
Guess, we're spoilt for quality waves here in Oz.
Have a friend here who has had great waves in Scotland and Wales, but had so much rubber on said he felt like the Michelin Man!
Kind wishes, J
Does Peter's hobby merit a separate blog? Perhaps Hyperfrigid?
Peter,
From Fiber Menace site:
But as long as your intestinal flora is alive, fiber stimulates fermentation, just like when making beer or wine. The resulting build up of gases and acids causes bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence, and, often, diarrhea.
These unpleasant conditions are commonly blamed on gluten sensitivity, lactose intolerance, yeast overgrowth, parasites, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulosis, and even premenstrual syndrome, while, in reality, they all result from the fermentation of fiber, plain and simple.
What do you think?. Could fiber be such big trouble?
Hi Gyan,
This sort of shifted to Stephan's blog, guess you've seen. I find it impossible to eat real foods without 7-10g/d of non grain fiber creeping in and I can't see a problem with this. It's the idea that fiber is necessary for health which I very much doubt, and even more that it is a panacea!

Hi Wattlebird,
We got 4 foot and messy Saturday with 3 foot and clean Sunday. Not exactly adrenaline pumping but fun if you are in deep surf withdrawal. Too small to face a wet wet suit the last 2 days. But my son did discover the 40 foot "vertical drop for the first 20 foot" slide at a theme park. Wore me out repeatedly carrying him up the steps.

Peter,
Been re-reading the Fiaf posts.
What I dont get is what do bacteria gain from turning up Fiaf expression. How do they benefit if their hosts (ie us) start to burn up fats.
The bacteria I suppose consume either fiber or mucosa secretions.
Gyan,
I think it's to keep us alive so we can go an chew some leaves! High fat diets just side step the gut bacteria, they're not interested, we then just do our own thing.

The Fiber Menace book is confusing. He gives a litany of problems a person would have if he consumes a lot of fiber (it is not always clear if he means natural fiber or supplemental fiber),
Now many people consume huge amount of wheat-- here 300-400 g/day wheat or maize flour is not uncommon. And a lot of these people do not develop the litany of GI problems that Fiber Menace describes.
So there have to be other factors.
I wonder if consuming fats with fiber helps?.
Gyan,
yes Fibre Menace guy is filled with zeal (formerly different substance I guess) in his abhorrence for fibre.
Perused the Fibre Menace site recently and read one of his pieces titled Atkins meets South Beach. If I recall it properly he recommends eating about 70g of fat and around 50ish g of carb a day.
Such low amounts of fuel.
In my opinion so many of these folk are on the wrong track recommending arbitary amounts that for so many people would require will to even try to follow, and longterm, have got no chance of success at all unless the amounts dovetail in with a rare individuals fuel requirements.
I think it is physiological not mental. Eat enough fuel and then the body is satisfied, if you dont then the outcome is being jittery, anxious, cranky, sick and so forth.
Then it comes down to the right fuel.
Personally I choose fat and much more than 70g.
Kind wishes, J
